Compare software with the same animal, milk and feed records. Use a practical checklist to test daily work, plan limits and data requirements.

Start with the problem you want herd management software to solve. Is finding an animal slow, are milk records kept separately, or are feed expenses attached to the wrong period? Build your trial around a real daily task before comparing long feature lists.

1. Compare with the same sample records

Try three animals, two weight dates, a daily milk quantity and a feed expense in each product. Use sample data where real personal information is unnecessary. Move an animal between groups and check that its earlier records remain accessible.

Test corrections as well as new entries. Change an incorrect quantity, check the date filters and ask another team member to find the same event.

2. Start with your type of operation

A dairy farm may prioritise daily milk and feed records. A beef operation may focus on dated weights and purchase or sale events. A sheep or goat operation may place greater importance on group organisation and finding birth records.

Choose three essential tasks and test them with the person who will enter daily records. An interface that works for the manager may not suit everyone working in the field.

3. Compare plan terms, not only the headline price

Review animal, staff and parcel limits, trial duration, support scope and billing period together. A free trial and an ongoing free plan can have different conditions.

Tarliva displays current limits, prices and trial terms on its Pricing page. Check them at registration rather than relying on a fixed price quoted in an older article. Consider which plan you would need if your operation grows.

4. Ask specific questions about data and devices

Before transferring old records, confirm which fields can be migrated from a sample file. Identifiers, dates and units need to match. If you require exports, examine a sample report and the available file formats before purchasing.

For a collar or scale, ask about the exact brand, model and connection method. Tarliva's device connectivity infrastructure does not mean that every device already has a completed, tested integration.

Write a short decision note

Review this note with your team. Choose a tool you can use consistently and whose records you can explain.

  • Which three daily tasks did we complete?
  • Which fields were missing or unclear?
  • Did totals match our earlier records?
  • Are the plan limits sufficient?
  • Which migration, reporting or device questions remain?
